Trey

We found lumps on Trey’s neck and had him examined.  We suspect he has systemic histiocytosis - a reactive inflammatory diseases in which a disorder of immune system regulation is suspected.  Histiocytosis is a cancer which proliferates rapidly and invade a wide variety of tissues. Histiocytes are a type of white blood cell called macrophages which ordinarily form part of the dog’s immune system. Their proper role is to engulf bacteria and other material which should not be present in the body and dispose of it. Histiocytosis is quite rare in other breeds but it is the most common cancer in Bernese Mountain Dogs comprising 25% of all cases.

Systemic histiocytosis can have episodes that come and go with varying severity. It invades the skin and peripheral lymph nodes in almost every case but also involves other tissues particularly in later stages of the disease. With systemic histiocytosis skin abnormalities are common, particularly on the face and limbs. If the tumor has metastasized to the lungs there may be trouble breathing. There are no successful treatments for histiocytosis at this time. It is simply a difference in how long the disease takes to run its course.

Trey’s surgery left him with stitches on his neck and left side.  Below he models a t-shirt to keep him from scratching open the stitches.  Since this picture we have found a turtle neck shirt which better protects his neck. With temperatures in the 70’s Trey is warm and uncomfortable, but the shirt is a necessity for another week.

Trey & Scout

Our two large dogs are still in shedding mode.  Serious shedding mode.  As only large, long haired dogs breed for northern climates can do.  Trey isn’t very tolerant of Kathryn brushing him, but he & I have an understanding.  Usually after he registers his complaint we work through it and continue brushing.  Trey was 98 lbs at his last Vet checkup.

Scout, on the other hand, is a squirming, lap dog, suck up.  Brush me! Brush me!  Ohhhhh…..you are paying attention to me…….ooohhhh.  Scout just celebrated her 1st birthday and was 78 lbs at a recent Vet check up.

Cookout Corner

Last fall we cleared a small area in the far corner of our 40 acre woodlot where we had a fire pit and a few cookouts.  Demonstrating the extreme creatively that we use in naming locations it became christened “Cookout Corner” (other examples: Edge Trail, Trillium Trail, Buck Rake Pass, White Birch Field, Hanging Bucket, North Trail, etc, etc, you get the point).

Recently I tore up concrete slab from our walk way that goes no where and transported them to Cookout Corner to make a safer fire pit.  Tuesday night Eric, Kathryn and I used local transportation and took our dinner for an inaugural meal.

Our new fire pit is huge and much safer.  Below Trey checks for food scraps.

We have a home made table that I plan to move over to the area and we need to work on some semi-permanent seating.  If I get creative I will try to craft something ‘Adirondack-ish’using the chainsaw and logs.

Trey & Scout

With our deep snow the dogs are having a hard time deciding where they can comfortably use the outdoor toilet facilities. Here Scout is trying to make a decision.

Trey and Scout ask me if we are going to take those snowshoes for a walk. Trey is 95 lbs and Scout was recently weighed at 65 lbs.

Trey says - Did you catch my good side?

Scout strikes a profile that only she can achieve: 50% Golden Retriever 50% Newfoundland.

That’s What I Am Talking About! The dogs breaking trail.
